“Model School Zone”

Safer Kids Worldwide is a global organization dedicated to preventing injuries in children; this organization created the program “Model School Zone” in order to create safe zones around schools so that kids can walk to school in safer environments. Vietnam’s Model School Zone project was extremely successful in making 42 modifications to the street environment surrounding a primary school in Dong Nai Province. The majority of students in the province walk to school every day, and, prior to the renovations, most kids would walk on the road since there were inadequate walking paths. The project installed sidewalks, crosswalks and speed bumps in addition to improving safety signage, designing safer traffic patterns, and implementing a walking school bus program. The Model School Zone project was successful in reducing the number of pedestrian fatalities in that district and improving the safety of children walking to school!
