One of the most notable transformations in our solar system will begin within the next few weeks. Every eleven years, the sun's magnetic field changes polarity and completely flips. The flip indicates the peak of the star's solar cycle. The magnetic field will be gradually changing over the next three to four months, until it reaches a full field reversal. There are some practical implications of this amazing phenomenon, one being the earth's additional protection against hazardous cosmic rays. These cosmic rays are tiny, high energy particles that are the result of explosions in space. These pose a threat to satellites and astronauts orbiting the earth's atmosphere.
